Note that the following article was originally written with only heterosexuals in mind (see How To Overcome Any Sexual Desire, which is identical to the article below).  However, we have realized that the principles discussed below also apply to homosexuals.  You will find a follow-up article at Special Considerations For Homosexuals (link not yet active) and Psychiatric Analyses Of Ten Homosexuals (link not yet active).  Also, you will find our main page on human sexuality at Sexual Karate.  The principles explained on our Sexual Karate page and the articles referenced there also apply to homosexuals.

HOW TO OVERCOME ANY SEXUAL DESIRE

Before we proceed, please note that everything we have to say APPLIES ONLY TO A PERSON WHO HAS DECIDED TO OVERCOME SEXUAL DESIRE, EVEN IF THEY BELIEVE THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THEM TO DO SO!

Overcoming sexual desire is easy.  The problem is that PEOPLE (remember:  only those who have decided to overcome) HAVE THE DELUSION THAT THEY HAVE BEEN OVERCOME BY SEXUAL DESIRE.  We will now proceed to prove this.

God gives people dreams.  Numbers 12:6 says:

And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.

Note the words “and will speak unto him in a dream.”  This verse refers to SUPERNATURAL dreams.  Job 33:14-17 says:

(14)  For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.

(15)  In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;

(16)  Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,

(17)  That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.

Note the words “God speaketh…in a dream….”  This verse refers to NATURAL dreams.  We see from these two passages that God is involved with dreams.  There are many other passages of Scripture that prove that God is involved with dreams.

Now, NATURAL dreams are dreams that are the result of psychological mechanisms built into the human psyche.  Among these dreams are dreams of a sexual nature.  Sexual dreams contain PORNOGRAPHIC content.  Aren’t these dreams sinful?  No.  Why not?  Matthew 15:11-20 says:

(11)  Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

(12)  Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?

(13)  But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.

(14)  Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

(15)  Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.

(16)  And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?

(17)  Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?

(18)  But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

(19)  For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

(20)  These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

Jesus says, in verse 11, “Not that which GOETH INTO the mouth defileth a man,” and, in verse 18, he says, “But those things which proceed OUT OF the mouth…defile the man.”  In other words, pornographic content, which “GOES INTO” a person, DOES NOT MAKE A PERSON GUILTY.  What makes a person guilty is THEIR CHOOSING (CAUSING TO PROCEED OUT OF THEMSELF) TO USE PORNOGRAPHIC CONTENT.  BUT NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

YOU DO NOT CHOOSE WHAT YOU DREAM.  THEREFORE, WHAT YOU DREAM IS NEVER WRONGDOING.

To further establish the truths stated above we quote Mark 7:15-23:

(15)  There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

(16)  If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

(17)  And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.

(18)  And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;

(19)  Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?

(20)  And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

(21)  For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

(22)  Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

(23)  All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Jesus says, in verse 15, “There is NOTHING FROM WITHOUT a man, that ENTERING INTO HIM CAN DEFILE HIM: but the THINGS WHICH COME OUT OF HIM, those are they that DEFILE THE MAN.”  Note, especially, the words in capital letters:

NOTHING FROM WITHOUTENTERING INTO HIM CAN DEFILE HIM….

and

THINGS WHICH COME OUT OF HIM…DEFILE THE MAN….

In other words, as we proved above, pornographic content, which “ENTERS INTO” a person, DOES NOT MAKE A PERSON GUILTY.  What makes a person guilty is THEIR CHOOSING (CAUSING TO COME OUT OF THEMSELF) TO USE PORNOGRAPHIC CONTENT.  BUT, AGAIN, NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

YOU DO NOT CHOOSE WHAT YOU DREAM.  THEREFORE, WHAT YOU DREAM IS NEVER WRONGDOING.

To repeat what we said above:  there are some dreams that are the result of psychological mechanisms built into human beings.  Among these dreams are dreams of a sexual nature.  Sexual dreams contain PORNOGRAPHIC content.  Aren’t these dreams sinful?  The answer as we have proven above is a resounding NO!

Now, does the Bible contain all the knowledge possessed by mankind?  No.  II Peter 1:5 says:

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

This verse says, “…add…to virtue knowledge.”  This is one of many verses in the Bible where God tells us to get knowledge.  Knowledge is not just knowledge of the Bible.  Knowledge can be knowledge of anything.  For our purposes here, knowledge can be knowledge of psychiatry.

Psychiatric literature is filled with documented evidence of a state of mind called a “fugue.”  A fugue is defined as:

A disturbed state of consciousness in which the one affected seems to perform acts in full awareness but upon recovery cannot recollect the deeds

Note that “upon recovery” they “cannot recollect the deeds.”  Now, think about this relative to dreams.  It is usually true that we forget our dreams within seconds after we awake (unless we have the presence of mind to make a conscious effort to remember what we were dreaming and then make that conscious effort).  We see, then, that a fugue is a “waking dream.”  Now, there are some psychiatrists who will jump up and say, “You are not correctly explaining what a fugue is.”  To satisfy these psychiatrists, we will go a little deeper.  There is another state of mind called a “virtual fugue.”  A virtual fugue is defined as:

A disturbed state of consciousness in which the one affected seems to perform acts in full awareness and upon recovery CAN recollect the deeds

Now, what is the importance of this knowledge?  Very simply, a person (remember:  we are only talking about those who have decided to overcome)…a person will EITHER OVERCOME THEIR SEXUAL DESIRE OR RESIST THEIR SEXUAL DESIRE THEN FAIL TO RESIST A VIRTUAL FUGUE STATE.  If you overcome, you have overcome.  If you fail to resist a VIRTUAL FUGUE state, YOU HAVE NOT FAILED COMPLETELY!  YOU HAVE OVERCOME TO A DEGREE!  YOUR PARTIAL VICTORY LIES IN THE FACT THAT YOU RESISTED YOUR SEXUAL DESIRE FOR A TIME BEFORE YOU FAILED TO RESIST THE VIRTUAL FUGUE STATE.  NOW NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

ACTIVITY THAT WOULD BE WRONGDOING WHILE ONE IS NOT IN A VIRTUAL FUGUE STATE IS STILL WRONGDOING WHILE ONE IS IN A VIRTUAL FUGUE STATE.

Note that God’s response to wrongdoing is NOT uniform.  He deals with each person individually.  He takes into consideration any person’s sincere effort to refrain from wrongdoing.  Those whose action is involuntary will be given more strength to fight the next bout of temptation.  Those whose action is voluntary will be chastised or punished.  Chastisement and punishment are not the same.  There are degrees of chastisement, ranging from mild to severe, and the purpose of chastisement is the betterment of the person.  There are no degrees of punishment; all punishment is severe and the purpose of punishment is justice.

A PERSON WHO GIVES IN TO A VIRTUAL FUGUE STATE HAS NOT FULLY OVERCOME THEIR SEXUAL DESIRE BUT, IF THEY PERSIST IN SEEKING TO OVERCOME THEIR SEXUAL DESIRE, WILL MAKE PROGRESS TOWARD FULLY OVERCOMING THEIR SEXUAL DESIRE.

ALSO, ONE NEVER HARMS THEMSELF OR ANYONE ELSE IN ANY WAY IN A VIRTUAL FUGUE STATE.)

Now, you may need some clarification.  About dreams we said:

There are some dreams that are the result of psychological mechanisms built into human beings.  Among these dreams are dreams of a sexual nature.  Sexual dreams contain PORNOGRAPHIC content.  Aren’t these dreams sinful?  The answer…is a resounding NO!

Now, a “virtual fugue” is a “waking dream,” a “dream you are having while awake.”  This dream is EXTRAORDINARILY special.  This dream appears to be waking experience.  Most people think it is waking experience.  (This explains the guilt and fear that most people experience.)  This dream actually and/or seemingly INTEGRATES with the physical world.  In other words, you actually and/or seemingly dream THE EXACT SAME PLACE YOU PHYSICALLY INHABIT.  How does one tell that they are having a waking dream rather than normal, waking experience?  Like a dream, a waking dream is SURREALISTIC; that is, it involves some UNREAL things.  Regarding these UNREAL things (the following is quoted from the SL (Session Library) of one of my patients with their permission and typifies the experience of over one thousand of my patients over the last ten years [nonitalic words in square brackets are mine]):

One UNREAL thing is the seeming disappearance of my will [read Psychological Automatisms – What Really Happens for detailed information].  I think “I’ve lost my power to act” and “my conscious will has disappeared.”  I am unable to perceive [perceive with my mind or my senses] my own conscious will.  It is AS IF my conscious will has been amputated from my psyche [also conceived as my mind or heart or soul or spirit or conscious awareness].  This inability to perceive my conscious will is temporary.  Another UNREAL thing is that physical space and the “region” where my conscious will is supposed to reside run into each other; that is, there is no boundary between them.  A third UNREAL thing is that physical space has the same nature as the “region” where my conscious will is supposed to reside; this means I am unable to distinguish physical space from the “region” where my conscious will is supposed to reside.

Now, regarding “waking dreams” we know the following:

There are some waking dreams (virtual fugues) that are the result of psychological mechanisms built into human beings.  Among these waking dreams (virtual fugues) are waking dreams (virtual fugues) of a sexual nature.  Sexual, waking dreams (sexual, virtual fugues) contain PORNOGRAPHIC content.  Aren’t these waking dreams (virtual fugues) sinful?  As far as the experience, not the activity, of these waking dreams is concerned, the answer is no.  In other words, these waking dreams are not COMPLETELY sinful.

Why aren’t these sexual waking dreams completely sinful?  Following the same line of reasoning as for dreams (read earlier in this article regarding dreams) and factoring in the objective physical activity that accompanies a waking dream, we can state the following:

YOU DO NOT CHOOSE WHAT YOU WAKEFULLY DREAM.  THEREFORE, WHAT YOU WAKEFULLY DREAM IS NEVER WRONGDOING AS FAR AS THE PERCEPTIONS, NOT THE ACTIVITY, INVOLVED IN THE WAKING DREAM ARE CONCERNED.

ACTIVITY THAT WOULD BE WRONGDOING WHILE ONE IS NOT WAKEFULLY DREAMING IS STILL WRONGDOING WHILE ONE IS WAKEFULLY DREAMING.

A PERSON WHO GIVES IN TO WAKEFUL DREAMING HAS NOT FULLY OVERCOME THEIR SEXUAL DESIRE BUT, IF THEY PERSIST IN SEEKING TO OVERCOME THEIR SEXUAL DESIRE, WILL MAKE PROGRESS TOWARD FULLY OVERCOMING THEIR SEXUAL DESIRE.

Finally, you may be asking yourself why you were never told these things before.  The fact is that this knowledge was lost in the 19th century.  Around 1850, the “mind scientists” of the time persuaded everyone, including Christians, that there was no such thing as waking dreams (what today are called “virtual fugues”) and, incredibly, though it is not the first time knowledge has been lost on a grand scale, the knowledge of waking dreams (virtual fugues) was lost to most of mankind.  Fortunately, there were those who preserved this knowledge in writing and, during the early 20th century, with the help of their writings, experimental psychiatry rediscovered the knowledge of waking dreams (virtual fugues).  We note, with some pride, that it was PNEUMIATRIC, CHRISTIAN, experimental psychiatrists that rediscovered the knowledge of waking dreams (virtual fugues).
